The world of animal rescue can seem overwhelming. And no one person can do it alone. But working together, everyone doing what they are able to do…….make a huge impact.
So…….what are some things you can do?
⦁ Pay to get the stray cat altered
⦁ Transport a cat to the veterinarian for a neighbor who cannot.
⦁ Help set the live trap for a neighbor who may be elderly or handicapped
⦁ Donate to the local rescues, both dollars and needed items, such as food, litter, blankets, toys, etc.
⦁ Help fundraise for a rescue.
⦁ Create gift baskets for a rescue to raffle off.
⦁ Find all the rescues and resources in your area and create a master list to share.
⦁ Does your neighbor seem overwhelmed? Offer help, not criticism. Sometimes people simply do NOT know what to do, or what the options are. In years past, when I told people what the options were for their particular situation, they appreciated knowing, even if it wasn’t the information they wanted. At least, now, they KNEW.
⦁ Can you adopt or foster?
⦁ Use pet friendly/humane options for garden and lawn pests.
⦁ Ask your shelter if you can sponsor the adoption of a pet.
⦁ Do you walk or jog? Ask your local shelter or rescue if you could take one of their dogs for a walk or run? Being confined 24/7 in a cage is very difficult on animals. Giving a dog an hours’ run or walk, with lots of one on one attention, can make all the difference in its mental attitude.
⦁ Do you have particular skill sets, such as computers, photography, bookeeping, web page design, poster desgin? Ask your local rescue or shelter if that skill is something they need?
⦁ Talk to a local business that sells pet supplies and ask about setting up on a certain day to accept donations of items. Then advertise, create fliers – on this day at this time I will be at this store accepting pet donations for this shelter or rescue. Have big signage on your vehicle or table so people know who you are and what you are doing.
⦁ Is there a rescue organization in your area? If not, talk to some folks who also care passionately about the animal situation and start one.
You don’t have to have a shelter. Provide funding for spay/neuter coupons, transportation to the nearest veterinarian, shelter, or rescue for those who are unable to drive.
There are so many things one can do. By working together, we CAN make a difference, one home, one neighborhood, one community at a time. SPAY AND NEUTER – it is the solution.
